The Tesla Model Y has many features that are extremely useful and the frequent software upgrade improves the experience. However, there is one feature that is glaringly missing which cannot be fixed by software – kick sensor for the rear hatch door. This is a feature that Ford Edge, Nissan Rogue, Honda CRV, Hyundai Santa Fe has. Kick sensor is great when you approach the car and your hands are full, you can place our foot under the rear bumper to trigger the hatch / trunk to open.

Now, there is a solution. Although it is after market, the price is reasonable. The installation leverages existing connectors by adding bypasses. Though my search, I found two products that would achieve this.

Hansshow – Model Y Electric Tailgate Kick Sensor ||||| EVOffer – Model 3/Y Tailgate Foot Activation

I went with Hansshow. I watched a few youtube videos and seemed the Hansshow was do-able. In full transparency, I was not aware of the one from EVOffer.

Install

In preparation for this, I watched and re-watched the 2 youtube videos I saved in Youtube. It seemed simple enough. Open the trunk panels, remove the trunk bin, thread the cable through, connect the plugs and magic! Both stated it took them roughly 1 hr and 30 min.

A little about myself, I am pretty handy but not the most mechanically inclined. I used to change the oil on my older cars but leave it to the professionals I am pretty techie but not with electricals. I would likely pass if I didn’t believe I could do it. Although, I did mentally prepare myself that I would hire a professional to install it if I failed.

Removing the two panels on the hatch

This was the easy part. The rear panel on the hatch comes out in two pieces.

Next, I had to thread the harness through the rubber accordion. This was the most difficult part by far as there were already existing wires running through.

I wasn’t given much of a fish line hook to pull the wire. They gave me a plastic cable. I had to improvise. Vaseline helped.

Success

Finally I had to connect the plugs. It took me a bit but I figured it out. The instructions that identified the location helped.

(L) shows the round gray plug that you need to bypass the trunk physical button above the license plate
(R) the parallel clamp on to tap onto the “cigarette lighter” to access 12V

The others were self explanatory.

You also had to remove the trunk tub as the motion sensor had to be placed underneath it above the under guard. There are 5 bolts (4 hex, 1 star) to remove from the top and 5 bolts from the underbelly of the car.

In the end, this is how I threaded it per instructions.

Testing Kick Sensor

Here is the working Hansshow Model Y Electric Tailgate Kick Sensor in action.

Here is the opening. Very satisfied. I realized it works best when you do a quick in / out motion. It’s tempting to let your foot dangle but it actually hinders the sensor.

Here is the closing. Again, quick motion. There is a 2 sec delay for safety?

Overall, very happy. Both my wife and kids all had a kick out of it (pun intended). In total, it took about 3 hours. The reason due to the lack of proper fish wire and poor instructions. It also looks like Hansshow changed their harness a bit as the 12V was drawn from the left side and not the right side. The two youtube videos skipped the part about tapping into the 12V so I wasn’t sure what was done.

You ordered your Tesla, now what? Here are the next steps and wait times after you order your Tesla Model S, 3, X, Y. I haven’t pre-ordered the Cybertruck or Roadster so I can’t speak for that.

It is a surreal feeling you can place an order for a car, to your specifications and not have to negotiate the price from the comfort of your home with just a few clicks and a $100 deposit. It wasn’t always $100, in the past, Tesla accepted $2,500 but was fully refundable. The current $100 deposit is non-refundable.

Between the order and delivery, you have some tasks to complete which the Tesla Account section will navigate you through. The time you have depends on the delivery which can vary widely. Tesla does advertise the approximate wait time to delivery but this can very. There’s been instances where Tesla is able to match a vehicle THE SAME DAY and where people have waited weeks and even months beyond their original estimated delivery window. I do believe otherwise, most deliveries happen within the window.

Registration Details

Upon placing your order, you need to complete your registration details. This includes verifying your name, address and contact details. This is important as it will allow them to know where to deliver your vehicle and to check against their database to see if they can match you with a vehicle.

Driver’s License

Next, you will be asked to upload the front and back of your driver’s license. The driver’s license should be current and not expired.

Insurance

This will vary depending on your state insurance regulations. In some states, like California, you can use your existing insurance. Some states will require you to have your new car’s VIN (vehicle identification number) before you can get a quote and upload your insurance. Otherwise, you can upload your current insurance as a placeholder until you are required to purchase insurance. Again, check your state.

Trade-in

You will be asked to enter the details if you plan on trading in a vehicle. Trading in a vehicle may seem to be a great non-hassle way to sell your car and count it against your downpayment for your Tesla. However, similar to other car dealers, you will not get the best value. It also seems to appear to become worse in terms of value you will get from your trade in. Tesla is not in the business of selling used cars especially non-Teslas. If you want maximum value, you should sell your care through private party. Next best would be to try companies such as Carmax, Vroom, SHIFT, Carvana and other used car chains.

Payment Method

Buying a car is no chump change. Kudos to those who can pay cash. To the rest of us who need to finance, you can easily get a quote from Tesla finance by going through their process through the Tesla portal. As long as your credit report isn’t locked, you can get a quote with in 2-3 days. Therefore, it may be wise to wait till you get a VIN before you go through this step. If you want Tesla to match a quote you found outside, you may email autofinance@tesla.com and ratematch@tesla.com.

Wait

This is the hard part. You wait. As of Aug 2021, the wait is even more long. At the time this blog was written, the estimated delivery date for a Model Y LR is Jan. 2022. Performance is 6-7 week so just short of 2 months.

In a surprising twist, Tesla finally released the Model Y in Hong Kong and the Standard Range RWD is available at $329,800 HKD which is around $42,500 USD. Model Y has been available in Mainland China for a few months now and this comes as a surprise as the SR RWD was not available in China. As of now, all the configurations are the same except the 7 seater is not available.

A quick glance at Tesla China shows only the long rang AWD and performance is available.

I’ve imagined this day for close to a year. Ever since the pandemic, I was literally days from buying my original car the Subaru Outback. I already received quotes from several dealers and even had a customer loyalty discount of $500 from corporate office. However, covid through a curve ball and complicated things as I couldn’t go and test drive. As I started looking at the out the door price I received, I realized that the cost was close to and even surpassed $40,000. At this price point I figured why not go a little bit higher and get the model y. I then went into the rabbit hole of model y forums and Facebook groups.

Prior to this day I received notice that my model y was ready for delivery. However, Tesla notified me that new policy was all cars or to be home delivered. This gave me a bit concern as I wanted issues to be addressed when I inspect the car. They assured me that I could inspect the car and have a repaired even after home delivery. After a few back and forth I was able to request for delivery at the service center.

I arrived at the service center around 1:00 p.m. they weren’t a lot of cars on the lot as they were doing home deliveries. I immediately found my car as it was the only blue Tesla y on the lot with white interior. It also had a sign with my name on the dash. It’s so unfortunate that they moved to home deliveries as I think the experience is something to enjoy. I was so excited that all of the worries and of finding issues went out the door. I did have a checklist in hand but very soon I just want to get in and tinker with a car. I did find some really minor issues such as a tear in the headrest as well as a deep scratch inside the door which day solve right away. The headrest had to be scheduled as they didn’t have anything in stock. After maybe about 30 minutes of looking over the car I accepted delivery in my app and I was able to control the car.

I walked back in and completed the paperwork. Not a lot honestly. Despite the insistence through the Tesla account to pay in full prior to the service and the option to do wire transfer using Tesla’s Plaid service, I opted to pay via cashiers check which I got at my bank earlier. The cashiers check was in the amount of downpayment I wanted. Keep in mind Tesla has the $100 I put in from placing the order.

All your paperwork is found in the ‘Glovebox’ in your google account – https://www.tesla.com/teslaaccount including what loan agreement, if through Tesla, and any rebate paperwork. The temporary registration or permanent will be given to you depending on your state or country requirements.

Nothing can prepare for your this moment. You’ve watched numerous Youtube videos and if you managed to go through the pdf driver’s manual, more power to you. As this is my first Tesla, EVERYTHING was new. I did test drive the car 3 times so I knew the basic. One advise I would give is do not rush. Take your time in the parking lot and ensure all the settings are correct. Check basic things such as side and rear mirror. Check the seat and steering position to make sure you have all of the blind spots. Obviously, put away your phone after you add it to the car.

It was a bit nerve wracking but once I got on the road, I enjoyed the whole ride back. Excited to embark on this journey!

If you missed out on ordering a Standard Range RWD Model Y and missed out on inventory vehicle, the demo cars are not listed as NEW INVENTORY on Tesla’s website.

Demo vehicles are cars that were used at Tesla showrooms for test drives. They do some have some mileage on them. Although they were used as test drive vehicles, they are considered NEW and would qualify for all federal and state tax incentives. They are usually discounted anywhere up to just under $2,000 depending on the mileage and any wear.

We had a wild week in the world of Tesla Model Y. To recap, Tesla cut the SR RWD by $2,000 on Thursday to the delight of many people (including shareholders). This made the lowest cost Model Y competitive in price to the VW ID.4 and the Ford Mach-e.

Then on Saturday, Tesla took many by surprise by removing the SR RWD option from the vehicle configurator online. Many people thought it was a glitch and that it would come back shortly. On Sunday, showrooms were told the change was permanent and that’s all the info they had. We posted an alternative way to order by requesting for an inventory vehicle but that will be exhausted shortly.

Many people turned to Twitter where Elon Musk is extremely active and occasionally does answer questions about SpaceX, Tesla or other ventures when not posting memes. Jason LRRWD Y (@jgrano305) managed to get a response from @elonmusk himself on Twitter. This was Elon Musk’s response.

It is still available off menu, but I don’t think the range, in many drive conditions, yet meets the Tesla standard of excellence

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) February 22, 2021

This tweet gave a lot of people a sigh of relief as it hints that the SR RWD Model Y was still available just not through the website. If you recall, the $35,000 Model 3 was available only through “off menu”. It was a stripped down version of the Standard Range Model 3 that was available through the website. People assumed that it was the same process where they can still order the SR RWD Model Y by calling Tesla or in person at a showroom.

However, a few people tried this and found that the only option available was inventory vehicles. Today, Tesla held a all hands meeting with their front line staff to re-affirm that the SR RWD Model Y was NOT available to order off menu and to redirect customers to inventory vehicles or AWD options.

What a disappointment!

Later the same evening, @jgrano305 inquired if this means they will produce the much awaited LR RWD Model Y? Here is Elon’s answer:

We have too much product complexity already

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) February 22, 2021

The answer is cryptic but it hints that Tesla has no immediate plans to offer another trim but will focus on what they have.

My take is that Fremont is over capacity and they want to streamline the production lines as much as possible. SR RWD Model Y was a test and very soon they realized that the benefit did not warrant another trim. I suspect things may change whey GigaTexas opens towards the end of 2021 or early 2022 but that may be too far away for those who have been waiting for LR RWD from two years ago.

Tesla shocked everyone by removing the Standard Range (SR) RWD Model Y just merely 36 hours after reducing the price by $2,000. As of now, the only trim available for Model Y is the Long Rang (LR) AWD and Performance. However, those are $9,000 and $19,000 more respectively.

A lot of people are frustrated as they were about to pull the trigger and order the SR RWD Model Y as it was tremendous value for full premium interior which would give it premium audio, heated rear seats and more.

Word is spreading that this change is permanent and Telsa will not bring back the Standard Range RWD Model Y at least in its current form. There is a possibility they may bring it back with partial premium interior, similar to the Model 3 SR+, or actually bring the LR RWD to production

However, there is still a small window of opportunity to grab this unicorn, the SR RWD Model Y! I was one of those who missed out on putting an order for the SR RWD as I was waiting for the headlights update. I called into my closest Tesla showroom and inquired about any inventoried vehicle. My only request was blue exterior, white interior. Lo and behold, she found 6! I immediately asked her to secure it and I was able to lock it in after providing a $100 deposit.

Below is the confirmation email! The VIN is lower but at this point, it’s irrelevant. I would much rather have the car than to worry about heated steering, updated console or headlights.

Find your nearest Tesla shop and call them. You can find their number when you search Google Maps. The only problem is the the price reflects the original without the $2,000 price adjustment that happened on Thursday. I’ll sort that would with my sales associate (SA).

If this helped you, I would appreciate if you could let your SA know my referral code! http://ts.la/kingleung57297

Update 2/21 – the removal is “permanent”

Something weird is happening. Tesla dropped the Model Y Standard Range RWD from the configurator on the evening of 2/20. They also reduced the LR AWD price by $1000.

Is this the end of the SR RWD experiment? Does this explain why Tesla dropped the price by $2000 to clear inventory? Will this mean the introduction of LR RWD? Or perhaps this is just a glitch while the site is being updated.

Thoughts?

I happen to have a test drive scheduled today for the SR. Will update afterwards to see what they say.

Update: At TMC.COM, user _tb_ posted to say they received a text from a Tesla CSR (customer service rep) to say that they are no longer offering the “custom standard range RWD Model Y” and also affirmed that they are “definitely” not making it. There are several reports from Tesla Facebook groups that also confirm that the SR Model Y is a long term change and not a glitch.

There is also mention that Tesla will honor those with existing Standard Range orders but will not accept any more new ones. But once the inventoried vehicles are exhausted, that is it.

For those with LR AWD orders, Tesla traditionally will automatically reflect the price change so your order will be reduced by $1000. Unfortunately for those that already took delivery or the LR AWD, Tesla will not refund you the $1000 difference.

Tesla changed the price to two of their highest volume vehicles, Model 3 and Model Y.

Tesla dropped their Model 3 Standard Range+ by $1,000 and their Model Y Standard Range by $2,000. The Model 3 SR+ is now $36,990 and Model Y SR went from $42k to now $40k ($39,990)

The performance for both Model 3 and Y increased $1,000. Model 3 Performance starts at $59,990 and Model Y Performance is now $60k ($60,990).

What prompted this? Is it sluggish sales by the SR? Or the news of a possible tax credit halt sales momentum? Or is it the possibility of introducing the LR RWD for the Model Y?? (unlikely)

2/12 Update – another user on reddit /u/StopPre182 reported that they received their delivery yesterday and had the new console. The VIN is 123xxxx. They posted much better photos:

This means the new console is getting through production on MSM and Blue exterior as well as black and white interior.

The car did not come with new headlights or the door jam trims.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

MY with new console spotted today!

Tesla Model Y Center console update alert! joeinsac from Tesla Motor Club visited his tesla showroom at Rocklin California earlier today and found a model Y with build date 2/9 vin 122778 with the new center console. The center console was first introduced in Model 3 and Y cars which were made in China.

Tesla did not mention when these center console would arrive in the US but many were waiting in hopes of getting rid of the current console with piano black.

Personally, I don’t have a strong preference between the new and old console and can go with either one. I’ve only seen in person the piano gloss console and it did seem functional. The sensitivity of the latch was a bit annoying when you pushed it too hard. The new console seems more functional and changes the material to a more matte finish. There is a cubbie which slides and retracts, which may attract more dust.

Here is a clear video of the new console from China.

If you go to the tesla.cn/modely/design page, you can see the updated center console here. For the time being, only black interior is available.

On a sidenote, this specific car seems to have the old headlights. Seems it isn’t universal where a specific trim or vin is getting the updated features (heated steering, headlights, console.

Which is most important to you?
