If you missed out on ordering a Standard Range RWD Model Y and missed out on inventory vehicle, the demo cars are not listed as NEW INVENTORY on Tesla’s website.

Demo vehicles are cars that were used at Tesla showrooms for test drives. They do some have some mileage on them. Although they were used as test drive vehicles, they are considered NEW and would qualify for all federal and state tax incentives. They are usually discounted anywhere up to just under $2,000 depending on the mileage and any wear.

We had a wild week in the world of Tesla Model Y. To recap, Tesla cut the SR RWD by $2,000 on Thursday to the delight of many people (including shareholders). This made the lowest cost Model Y competitive in price to the VW ID.4 and the Ford Mach-e.

Then on Saturday, Tesla took many by surprise by removing the SR RWD option from the vehicle configurator online. Many people thought it was a glitch and that it would come back shortly. On Sunday, showrooms were told the change was permanent and that’s all the info they had. We posted an alternative way to order by requesting for an inventory vehicle but that will be exhausted shortly.

Many people turned to Twitter where Elon Musk is extremely active and occasionally does answer questions about SpaceX, Tesla or other ventures when not posting memes. Jason LRRWD Y (@jgrano305) managed to get a response from @elonmusk himself on Twitter. This was Elon Musk’s response.

It is still available off menu, but I don’t think the range, in many drive conditions, yet meets the Tesla standard of excellence

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) February 22, 2021

This tweet gave a lot of people a sigh of relief as it hints that the SR RWD Model Y was still available just not through the website. If you recall, the $35,000 Model 3 was available only through “off menu”. It was a stripped down version of the Standard Range Model 3 that was available through the website. People assumed that it was the same process where they can still order the SR RWD Model Y by calling Tesla or in person at a showroom.

However, a few people tried this and found that the only option available was inventory vehicles. Today, Tesla held a all hands meeting with their front line staff to re-affirm that the SR RWD Model Y was NOT available to order off menu and to redirect customers to inventory vehicles or AWD options.

What a disappointment!

Later the same evening, @jgrano305 inquired if this means they will produce the much awaited LR RWD Model Y? Here is Elon’s answer:

We have too much product complexity already

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) February 22, 2021

The answer is cryptic but it hints that Tesla has no immediate plans to offer another trim but will focus on what they have.

My take is that Fremont is over capacity and they want to streamline the production lines as much as possible. SR RWD Model Y was a test and very soon they realized that the benefit did not warrant another trim. I suspect things may change whey GigaTexas opens towards the end of 2021 or early 2022 but that may be too far away for those who have been waiting for LR RWD from two years ago.

Tesla shocked everyone by removing the Standard Range (SR) RWD Model Y just merely 36 hours after reducing the price by $2,000. As of now, the only trim available for Model Y is the Long Rang (LR) AWD and Performance. However, those are $9,000 and $19,000 more respectively.

A lot of people are frustrated as they were about to pull the trigger and order the SR RWD Model Y as it was tremendous value for full premium interior which would give it premium audio, heated rear seats and more.

Word is spreading that this change is permanent and Telsa will not bring back the Standard Range RWD Model Y at least in its current form. There is a possibility they may bring it back with partial premium interior, similar to the Model 3 SR+, or actually bring the LR RWD to production

However, there is still a small window of opportunity to grab this unicorn, the SR RWD Model Y! I was one of those who missed out on putting an order for the SR RWD as I was waiting for the headlights update. I called into my closest Tesla showroom and inquired about any inventoried vehicle. My only request was blue exterior, white interior. Lo and behold, she found 6! I immediately asked her to secure it and I was able to lock it in after providing a $100 deposit.

Below is the confirmation email! The VIN is lower but at this point, it’s irrelevant. I would much rather have the car than to worry about heated steering, updated console or headlights.

Find your nearest Tesla shop and call them. You can find their number when you search Google Maps. The only problem is the the price reflects the original without the $2,000 price adjustment that happened on Thursday. I’ll sort that would with my sales associate (SA).

If this helped you, I would appreciate if you could let your SA know my referral code! http://ts.la/kingleung57297

Update 2/21 – the removal is “permanent”

Something weird is happening. Tesla dropped the Model Y Standard Range RWD from the configurator on the evening of 2/20. They also reduced the LR AWD price by $1000.

Is this the end of the SR RWD experiment? Does this explain why Tesla dropped the price by $2000 to clear inventory? Will this mean the introduction of LR RWD? Or perhaps this is just a glitch while the site is being updated.

Thoughts?

I happen to have a test drive scheduled today for the SR. Will update afterwards to see what they say.

Update: At TMC.COM, user _tb_ posted to say they received a text from a Tesla CSR (customer service rep) to say that they are no longer offering the “custom standard range RWD Model Y” and also affirmed that they are “definitely” not making it. There are several reports from Tesla Facebook groups that also confirm that the SR Model Y is a long term change and not a glitch.

There is also mention that Tesla will honor those with existing Standard Range orders but will not accept any more new ones. But once the inventoried vehicles are exhausted, that is it.

For those with LR AWD orders, Tesla traditionally will automatically reflect the price change so your order will be reduced by $1000. Unfortunately for those that already took delivery or the LR AWD, Tesla will not refund you the $1000 difference.

Tesla changed the price to two of their highest volume vehicles, Model 3 and Model Y.

Tesla dropped their Model 3 Standard Range+ by $1,000 and their Model Y Standard Range by $2,000. The Model 3 SR+ is now $36,990 and Model Y SR went from $42k to now $40k ($39,990)

The performance for both Model 3 and Y increased $1,000. Model 3 Performance starts at $59,990 and Model Y Performance is now $60k ($60,990).

What prompted this? Is it sluggish sales by the SR? Or the news of a possible tax credit halt sales momentum? Or is it the possibility of introducing the LR RWD for the Model Y?? (unlikely)

Tesla shocked the world when they released the Standard Range Rear Wheel Drive Model Y last month at a cost of $41,990! This was after they touted that the Long Rang Rear Wheel Drive Model Y release was going to be imminent.

Disclaimer – If you order from the link on this image, you and I both receive 1,000 free Super Charger Miles.

This was surprising as Elon Musk responded back in July, 2020 that they were not going to make it after @jgrano306 on Twitter noticed that the SR Model Y info was taken down from the configuration page. Elon responded that they were not going to make the SR Model Y as the range would be “unacceptably low” and would offer a “LR single motor Y in a few months”.

This got a lot of people excited as a Long Range (LR) Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) Model Y would hypothetically have more range than the LR All Wheel Drive (RWD) which has a published EPA of 326 miles. This was THE car that a lot of people wanted especially those who didn’t need the AWD or the 2nd motor. It also didn’t help that many people had put a $2,500 deposit for the LR RWD when it was initially available to order.

When the Tesla Model Y SR RWD was made available, one of the question everyone asked was, “What is the real road range?” As we’ve seen with previous Tesla models, range is determined by many factors. Similar to ICE (internal combustion engine) cars, we rare see cars get EPA rated mileage. The problem with electric vehicles is that even the best gets much less range than what we are accustomed to.

Range is impacted by many factors such as:

Weather (rain, snow, headwind)

High speed (freeway)

Driving pattern (stop and go)

Hills

Tesla actually has a page that gives you Range Tips on their site.

Model Y Standard Range Road Test

When the Model Y SR RWD was released with the start price of $41,990, it attracted many people for those who don’t need AWD or a bigger battery. Many shifted their attention to its range. As Elon Musk himself claimed that under 250 miles would not be acceptable, the EPA estimate had it at 244 miles. But many wondered how much would it actually get at full charge? How many miles would you get with a reasonable state of charge (SOC) from say 80% down to 20%?

I finally found Daily Driver on YouTube who did exactly this. He tried to emulate the EPA test of driving continuously between 70 – 77 mph with internal temperature of 72F. Outside temperature was a bit cold at 24F.

Based on his test video, he started his Model Y SR RWD at 93% SOC and drove 105 miles and ended at 26% SOC. He drained 67% of his battery on this trip. Based off of this, his efficiency was 322 Wh/Mile (to reach EPA values, you need to be at around 250 Wh/Mile). Had he started at 100% SOC and went all the way to 0%, he would have been able to travel 156 miles. This is well lower than the EPA estimated 244 miles.

In the video, he calculated 3.1 miles / kWh x 60 kw battery to get 186 miles which is higher than what I calculated.

Here is the video!
